| 07/12/94 RMIUG Meeting
- Boulder Community Network
Our speakers for the July 12th Rocky Mountain
Internet Users Group are Neal McBurnett
(AT&T Bell Labs), Wally Wedel (US West Advanced
Technologies), and Madeline Gonzalez (Boulder
Community Network). They will present the
Boulder Community Network; an on-line library
of information for and about Boulder County.
The community will be able to browse the
World Wide Web for local and global information
via public kiosks, the Internet and eventually
free dial-up lines.
BCN is a cooperative effort involving,
among others, the University of Colorado,
the Boulder and Longmont Public Libraries,
the Boulder Valley School District, Boulder
County and City governments, the Boulder
County United Way, the Boulder County Civic
Center (BCCC), and KGNU. We are also working
with the Knight-Ridder Information Design
Lab, Cable Labs, OneNet, the Boulder County
Business Report, the Daily Camera, Apple
Media Labs, and national labs.
A wide variety of information is currently
available, e.g., Boulder City Council minutes
& agendas, information about all the agencies
in the County that provide Employment and
Training services, and Colorado Music Festival
information among others. We also provide
links to CU-line, CARL and other Library
systems, the Boulder Valley School District's
Web site, and other sources of information
on the Internet.
Our grand opening and press conference
will take place on July 18th, but we would
like some "beta test" input before then.
Check out the server at http://bcn.boulder.co.us/
or telnet bcn.boulder.co.us 2001
(that specifies port 2001) before the meeting
and bring your ideas! [Note that Neal's
Email address is neal@drmail.dr.att.com]
The meeting is Tuesday, July 12th 14 from
7:00 - 9:00 pm (with optional 6:30 pm start
for informal networking and refreshments).
The meeting will be held at NCAR -- National
Center for Atmospheric Research -- in Boulder,
which is located on the west end of Table
Mesa Drive, up the hill, right under the
Flatirons. Park in the NCAR lot, go in the
main door, and ask the guard to point you
to meeting, which is held in the auditorium.
There is no cost for the meeting. Please
RSVP to ac551@freenet.hsc.colorado.edu
or phone 447-3475 if you plan on attending.
Thanks to Internet One of Boulder for sponsoring
refreshments.
We will have Internet books that can be
checked out of our virtual library. Thanks
to RMIUG members Joe Betts and Bo (the Bohemian)
for organizing the RMIUG library. Please
return any books you borrowed last time.
There will be a prize drawing for a free
copy of MKS Internet Anywhere (and anything
else interesting we can snarf to give away)
and we should have about 70 copies of the
Net Pages from Aldea Communications (an
Internet "white & yellow pages") to handout.
Consultants and companies are invited
to bring Internet-related product information,
brochures, and business cards which will
be displayed on an information table. There
will be literature from exhibitors at the
Mecklermedia Internet World 94 conference
which occurred last month in San Jose. At
least six RMIUG members attended the conference
and three were invited presenters.
There is close-in parking available at
NCAR for the physically challenged. For
detailed information about NCAR accessibility,
please call NCAR at 429-3340 and talk to
Facilities.
Dr. Michael Schwartz (schwartz@latour.cs.colorado.edu)
is scheduled to talk to us about about Internet
Resource Discovery (how do I find something?!?)
at our August 9th meeting (same "bat-time",
same "bat-channel"), and a session on Privacy,
Encryption, PGP, Clipper Chip, etc. is in
the works.
There is an email mailing list set up
for this group. General information can
be obtained by sending an Email to rmiug@rmiug.org
which will generate an auto-reply that tells
you about the group and how to subscribe.
