| 04/09/96 RMIUG Meeting
- Security Technology on the Internet
RMIUG'ers,
We wrote on April 1st:
- The Tuesday, April 9 meeting of the
Rocky Mountain Internet Users Group (RMIUG)
has two excellent speakers who are eminently
qualified to talk to us about how the
government and private sector view/use
the Internet; this is a meeting not to
be missed!
Al Gore (vice-president@whitehouse.gov)
will discuss how government ...
Bill Gates (billg@microsoft.com)
will present the private sector ...
...
P.S. The Secret Service has also informed
us that there will be some special security
requirements ... we will send out a
follow-up message in a few days that
will outline these.
Agent Peryl Feuhls from the White House
has still not given us a clear-cut answer
if NIST security is adequate for the Vice-President.
In addition, Mr. Gates has said that he
is a little short of cash right now (to
pay half of the room rental fee) since he
is saving up to buy AOL, Netscape, and Sun
in one fell swoop.
A hot topic these days is Internet Security
... and we are fortunate to have an excellent
speaker that has become available to us
for the April 9th meeting; so we have asked
Mr. Gore and Mr. Gates to speak at a later
meeting.
Both Mr. Gore and Mr. Gates understood
our decision to replace them with Mr. Ching
... and they have both tentatively committed
to speaking to RMIUG next year on April
1st, 1997 ... ;-)

The Tuesday, April 9 meeting of the Rocky
Mountain Internet Users Group (RMIUG) will
feature a presentation on Security Technology
on the Internet. Our presenter is Greg Ching
(greg.ching@sun.com) who works in
OEM/Reseller sales for SunSoft (http://www.sun.com/sunsoft/),
the software subsidiary of Sun Microsystems,
Inc. Mr. Ching, a Computer Systems Engineering
graduate from Stanford University, will
be discussing technology used for secure
transactions and access control on the Internet.
He will also be able to provide an update
and answer questions during the Q&A period
on Sun Microsystem's Java Workshop product.
Feel free to email questions before the
talk to Mr. Ching. SunSoft has also graciously
invited RMIUG members to learn more about
Sun security products at a Sun Open House
April 18 in Englewood. See http://www.sun.com/events/denver.html
for details.
The RMIUG meeting is Tuesday, April 9,
from 7:00 - 9:00 pm (with optional 6:30
pm start for informal networking and refreshments).
The meeting will be held at the Department
of Commerce (NIST) Building at 325 Broadway
in Boulder, one traffic light South of Baseline.
This facility holds 510 people. Park in
the Dept. of Commerce lot, go in the main
door (faces East), and find the main auditorium
just to the right of the main entrance.
The meeting is free and open to the public,
but we will be passing the hat (ie, Nike
shoebox ;-) to defray the room rental charge
we incur.
RMIUG appreciates the ongoing support
from Internet One of Boulder for sponsoring
refreshments and XOR Network Engineering
for administration of RMIUG's electronic
discussion lists & WWW site.
Consultants and companies are invited
to bring Internet-related product information,
brochures, and business cards which will
be displayed on an information table in
the lobby.
There is an email mailing list set up
for this group. General information can
be obtained by sending an Email to rmiug@rmiug.org
which will generate an auto-reply message
that tells you about the lists and how to
subscribe. You can also reach the RMIUG
"Executive" Committee at rmiug-comm@rmiug.org.
