Q-0:
What are the "RULES" of this list?
A-0: Some general guidelines/rules are listed
below in addition to some misc. Information available
at the RMIUG web site at http://www.rmiug.org/
Note that these guidelines/rules can be changed
at any time without prior notice as the moderators/maintainers
of the Email lists and/or Web Sites see fit. It's
a FREE service run by VOLUNTEERS - we've been
doing this since 1994 - rest assured we've seen
just about every version of stupidity/rudeness/flamefests/etc.
We prefer to take a hands-off approach and let
things/situations work themselves out, so don't
ask us to get involved unless it is something
really outa hand ... and pls be nice to us and
the subscribers.
Q-1: What is RMIUG?
A-1: RMIUG (Rocky Mountain Internet Users Group)
is a group that meets every other a month to learn
about the Internet through presentations, information
sharing, questions & answers and informal
conversations. We typically have about a 100 people
attend our meetings. They are held at NCAR in
Boulder on the second Tuesday of the odd month,
from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. There is an optional half-hour
period from 6:30 to 7:00 for new user questions
and informal networking. We try to start at 7:00
sharp with general announcements from us and the
audience. Our featured presentation will usually
start around 7:15-7:30 and last about an hour.
Minutes from the meetings will be posted to the
RMIUG Email list. There is no cost for attending
the meetings or joining the group.
We also have some fairly active Email lists (see
most of this FAQ! ;-).
And finally, our web site can be seen at http://www.rmiug.org/
Q-2: Who runs RMIUG?
A-2: There is an "executive" committee
that try to keep things from reaching a total
state in anarchy. The 5 Exec's are :
Alek Komarnitsky
Byran Buus
Dan Murray
Jeff Finkelstein
Tom Bresnahan
You can read more about us at the RMIUG Web Site
and can Email all
of us at rmiug-comm@rmiug.org. We are a volunteer
run organization.
Q-3: What are the RMIUG Email lists on Yahoogroups?
A-3: There are currently four RMIUG lists of interest
to folks:
rmiug-announce: Moderated list. Low volume, restricted
to meeting announcements/Minutes, and items of
direct interest to our members. Everyone should
subscribe to this list; but nobody can post to
it unless it is approved by the list moderator
... and Alek is tough! Volume has averaged less
than 5 per month.
rmiug-discuss: Unmoderated list that ONLY members
can post to. I.e. you must join this list to post
(this discourages spamming). This list is for
discussion of topics that are of interest to the
Front Range, Colorado Internet community - ranging
from local Internet events to service provider
issues and anything else.
rmiug-jobs: Unmoderated list that anyone can
post to. While the "anyone" can allow
spamming (and we might change this policy), we
wanted to make it easy for employers to post job
openings. Can also be used to discuss how use
the Internet to explore employment, etc.
rmiug-jobtalk: Unmoderated list that ONLY members
can post to. I.e. you must join this list to post
(this discourages spamming). This list is for
discussions of job-related issues, such as interviewing,
job search strategies, recruiters, salary, resumes,
etc.
Q-4: What are the posting guidelines to RMIUG
Email lists?
A-4: "Standard rules/guidelines" apply
to posting - i.e. keep it on topic, be to the
point and short, be polite, etc. These simple
concepts seems to escape a small handful of people
and result in most of the "flame wars"
For rmiug-jobs, we ask/suggest the following:
- Recruiters post no more frequently than 4 times/week
(combine posting if you need to).
- Include Company location and job title in
the subject line. Example: Boulder, Colorado -
Jr. Cold Fusion Developer
- Restrict posting to Colorado and for Internet/computer
related ONLY.
Q-5: Are attachments allowed on the RMIUG Email
lists?
A-5: NOPE ... Yahoogroups is configured to strip
these - convert to ASCII. This not only greatly
reduces the size of the Emails, but tend to filter
out some spam ... and also drops a buncha viruses.
Q-6: I sent an Email with my resume attached
... but it's didn't appear - what happened?
A-6: Nothing personal, but the RMIUG YahooGroups
list is configured to block all attachments. You
probably saw this message on the bottom of your
original posting:
[Non-text portions of this message have been
removed]
Although you can't send an attachment, you can
just cut and paste the text of your resume into
the body of your message, and then submit it to
YahooGroups. This feature was installed to prevent
the number of macro viruses and Trojan horses
our members are exposed to - it's a good thing.
Q-7: How many people will see my posting?
A-7: As a member of the YahooGroups List, you
can view this information
directly at the YahooGroups web site ... but the
number is in the thousands,
so pick your words carefully and be sure it is
appropriate.
Q-8: Oh no - I just received e-mail messages
saying that a child has been kidnapped and that
people are stealing kidneys in Omaha. Should I
post them to the RMIUG YahooGroups list?
A-8: NO!!! Please don't!!! Most stories like this
are Urban Legends. If you have a high-gullibility
quotient, please review some of the Urban Legends
pages before forwarding ANYTHING that says "please
forward this to everyone you know". Suggested
sites include http://www.snopes.com and http://www.urbanlegends.com.
Q-9: Someone on RMIUG makes me angry. I want
to say rude things about (their company/their
mom/their co-workers/them).
A-9: Don't be a dumbass ... does more really need
to be said about this?!? ;-)
Q-10: I'm changing jobs and moving to a new
company. How can I keep getting YahooGroups?
A-10: Before you leave your first address, you
should change your YahooGroups profile to include
your new address.
Q-11: I'm getting flooded with RMIUG messages.
How can I change this?
A-11: By changing your delivery mode. By setting
the delivery mode, you determine whether you'd
like to receive new messages individually in your
e-mail inbox, whether you'd like to receive a
daily digest of these messages in various formats,
or whether you'd like to read new messages only
on the Web at YahooGroups.com (vacation setting).
Youu can change this by clicking on MEMBERSHIP
OPTIONS on the YahooGroups page.
The average traffic on the rmiug-discuss and
rmiug-jobs list is several hundred messages per
month. The high message volume is the number one
reason members give for unsubscribing to this
list ... but as mentioned above, YOU can do something
about it! ;-)
Q-12: What is an YahooGroups Profile?
A-12: Your Member Profile is where all your account
information is stored. You use the Member Profile
to identify yourself to YahooGroups, and (optionally)
to share some information about yourself with
other
members of your group. To access your member
profile:
1. Sign in at the YahooGroups Web site
2. Click My Groups.
3. Click the link for My Profile.
To learn more about Profiles, click here:
http://www.YahooGroups.com/help/myprofile.html
As part of your profile, you can change your e-mail
address, enter
alternative e-mail addresses, and edit your password.
If you haven't
set up your profile, you should.
Q-13: Do I have to have to register at YahooGroups
to get RMIUG Email?
A-13: NO ... there is an "Email only"
mode which allows you to get the Emails, but doesn't
require you to register - more info at: http://www.YahooGroups.com/help
Q-14: Is the RMIUG YahooGroups list archived
anywhere?
A-14: Yes - all messages sent to the YahooGroups
list can be reviewed at the messages section of
the appropriate list.
Q-15: WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL CAPS?
A-15: Since the earliest days of text-only communications,
capital Letters have been used for emphasis. A
message in all capital letter is the internet's
equivalent of SHOUTING IN SOMEONE'S EAR. So, posting
an all caps message is the easiest way for you
to destroy your credibility in front of your peers.
Be careful out there!
Q-16: I don't have a clue about netiquette. Where
can I look?
A-16: Netiquette is short for Network Etiquette,
the continuously evolving standards for polite
interaction on the net. If you have questions,
(or if you've never heard the word before) please
see
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/
Q-17: I have a question about YahooGroups. Who
should I talk to?
A-17: There is quite a bit of information available
at their web site at:
http://www.yahoogroups.com/
Q-18: I forgot my password. Can you send it
to me?
A-18: No, we can't. YahooGroups won't let us.
The only person who can get your password is you.
To have YahooGroups send you your password, go
to http://www.YahooGroups.com/remind. Enter the
email address that you used when you registered
with YahooGroups. They will send you instructions
and a reauthorization number that will allow you
to change your password. Please note that YahooGroups
works because it uses cookies to establish identity.
If you change machines, or kill your cookie files,
things will change. The only way to restore this
is to log on again with your password.
Q-19: What is this "XOR Inc" ad on
the bottom of each posting?
A-19: XOR Inc (http://www.xor.com/) has been a
long-time sponsor/support of RMIUG, and has paid
to remove the (much more intrusive) ads that by
default come with YahooGroups Email lists. We
appreciate their support/assistance and would
therefore like to thank them for that.
Q-20: I just Emailed something to the list -
how do I delete it?
A-20: The short-n-sweet answer is you can't -
it's an Email list and once you hit the SEND button,
it's outa your hands. So think about that next
time! ;-) If you REALLY want to delete that message,
an excellent (!) writeup on how to do it is at:
http://www.rmiug.org/remove-email.html/ BTW, if
you feel it's appropriate, a simple apology to
the list should suffice in most cases if you did
something really dumb - most people will respect
you more for apologizing/saying you are sorry/or
just an OOOPS!
Q-21: OK, the Email in thousands of peoples
mailboxes can't be deleted, but how do I delete
it from the YahooGroups archive?
A-21: First, you MUST have a registered Yahoo
ID in order to do this. Go to the appropriate
Yahoogroups Web Page, find the message that YOU
sent that you want to delete, click on that, and
click on the DELETE button that is at the top
and bottom of the posting. Pls do NOT ask the
moderator to delete postings for you - the Digital
Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) suggests that if
the moderator is willing to delete articles, then
they are exercising editorial control over the
list, and can then subsequently be held liable
if they do NOT remove something inappropriate.
Note that in addition to the Yahoogroups archives,
Email is kept/stored in various places in the
Internet, most of which are beyond our control;
so your message will almost certainly "live
on" in other places. So the BEST approach
is to be careful before you hit that SEND button!
